Attack the Block is one of the current stand-out films of the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) and with good reason: a film co-written and starring Nick Frost (Ed from Shaun of the Dead, who also co-wrote the hilarious Paul) about inner-city kids battling invading aliens looks like great fun.
I know kids in movies can get on the audience’s nerves, but the thing that made The Goonies and The Monster Squad so great was that the kids were taken seriously, they weren’t dumbed down. Kids in cinema are normally treated as just that – small bags of manipulative meat who appear on screen to be saved by the hero or make you fawn over their cuteness.
I remember being a kid and I never thought of myself that way. Make a kid kick some believable ass (the younger brother from Phantasm) and I’m in.
Attack the Block is scheduled to be released in the UK May 13, but does not have a US release date yet.
